About the Contest

2008 Embedded System Contest (short for "2008 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest - Embedded System Design Invitational Contest") invites undergraduate teams of three members (with a faculty mentor) to design, implement, and document a working prototype based on the assigned platforms. Designs can apply to any device that could be used in a real-world application, such as in the home, automobile, medical, industrial, or other industries. 

Key Dates

  • Register the number of participating teams: February 29th, 2008

  • Registration ends: March 14th, 2008

  • Contest period: March 15th to June 30th, 2008

  • Final reports submission due: July 1st, 2008

  • Appraisal period: July 15th to July 23rd, 2008

  • Dispute period: July 24th to August 7th, 2008

Eligibility

The contest is only open to undergraduate students. The participants should be actively enrolled as a student in an accredited college/university during the contest. 

Teams should consist of no more than three undergraduate students, and a faculty mentor. Each team must submit a registration form to Organization Committee before March 14th, 2008. All requested information must be provided for entries to be eligible.

Platforms

The contest will provide an embedded system platform based on Intel Duo Core Microprocessor. All the teams should develop systems on the specified platform.  

Rules and Regulations

Teams should consist of three undergraduate students and a faculty mentor. A mentor is not a member of the team, and cannot execute the work or solve the problems for the students.

Judges

Judges will consist of representatives from within academia, and industry.

Contents of submissions

Submissions should consist of brief introduction, full report, and the real project.

1. Brief introduction

Brief introduction template can be downloaded from the website. all the requested information must be provided. The introduction should within 250 words in English (font size 12, and single line pace). If you can provide Chinese version corresponded, that's better. The brief introduction should be submitted before July 1st, 2008 via email.

2. Report

The following information must be included in the report:

a. Originality declaration (can be downloaded from the website)

b. Title

c. Abstract (within 120 words in English) and keywords

d. System schema, functions, and implementation

e. Test plans and results analysis

f. References

The report must be within 20 pages in English(font size 12, and single line pace), including all the infromation required. The report should be submitted before July 1st, 2008 both via email and post (two copies).

3. Project

The project must be developed on the assigned platforms (See Platforms).

Teams should bring the project and special instruments needed for test to Shanghai by themselves. Teams should also prepare a 15-minutes verbal presentation.

Criteria for Judging

The following is a list of the criteria used to judge projects. This should help you understand the type of factors that professors take into account when evaluating a project:

  • How much the available resources are used in your project?

  • A project should be based on a "good idea." How well your project fits in the theme of being beneficial to society will be taken into account.

  • What's the specialty of your project?

  • Testing strategy and plan.

  • The project should be capable of being completed on time using the available resources.

  • The quality and presentation of your reports will be taken into account. Remember that this is a document that you are using to convince strangers that you are a winning team.

  • Your performance in the appraisal.
