2018 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest-Embedded System Design Invitational Contest, (Intel Cup Embedded System Design Contest: ESDC), was initiated by PRC government, is hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and is solely sponsored by Intel Corporation since 2002. Held every 2 years, the contest provides an opportunity for top undergraduate students to design a working system based on an assigned Intel embedded platform over a period of three months. Each team consists of no more than three members, with a faculty mentor.

We invite one team from your university to join the 2018 Intel Cup Embedded System Design Contest. All the participants will get hardware and software donated by Intel, and have opportunity to communicate with students from other parts of the world.

Key Dates

  • Registration due: January 30, 2018 for confirming team engagement and May 31, 2018 for team member information registration
  • Contest period: March 15~June 30, 2018
  • Project Topic submission deadline: May 31, 2018
  • Final reports submission deadline: July 1, 2018
  • Appraisal period: July 20~July 25, 2018 in Shanghai, China
  • Awarding ceremony will be held right after the appraisal in Shanghai, China

Eligibility

The contest is only open to the universities which are invited by contest committee and focuses on undergraduate students. The participants should be actively enrolled as a student in an accredited college/university during the contest. Teams should consist of no more than three undergraduate students, and a faculty mentor.

Platform

The theme of 2018 ESDC contest is: AI and IOT.

The contest will provide an embedded IA platform Up2 Board based on Intel® Atom™ Processor Apollo Lake with the corresponding Intel software to each participant team. All teams must develop systems on the assigned Intel® Up2 board. Also participant team can apply freely for one Cyclone 5 FPGA board which is developed by Intel and Terasic Inc based on the project needs. We will announce later how to apply the FGPA board. The detailed specifications of the platform will be disclosed on March 15, 2018.

Timetable

1 Registration

The registration includes two stages:

  1. Registration of university contact person and the number of teams participating in the contest. Universities should complete the ‘First Stage Registration Form’ and send the scanned copy by email to nuedc@sjtu.edu.cn by Jan. 30, 2018. This form can be downloaded from website: http://nuedc.sjtu.edu.cn.
  2. Registration of detailed team member information.  The detailed information about the team members (including their names, university, etc.) should be registered before May 31, 2018 according to the registration information on website http://nuedc.sjtu.edu.cn. After the registration is completed, a scan copy of the registration information with team members’ signatures should be sent back to the organizing committee by email (nuedc@sjtu.edu.cn) before May 31, 2018.

2 Training

The organizing committee will hold training workshop on website.

  1. The online training on hardware and software of the Intel® Up2 board and Cyclone 5 FPGA board will be available website: http://nuedc.sjtu.edu.cn.
  2. Contest platforms will be delivered to all participant teams on Mar 15th, 2018.

3 Appraisals

Each team should submit the project topic before May 31, 2018 to the organizing committee.

The contest will end on June 30, 2018. All participant teams should submit all necessary contest materials to the organizing committee on time. For teams from Chinese mainland, the required materials for submission include: a brief introduction, a full report in Chinese, detailed abstract in English and a working system. For teams from Hong Kong SAR, Chinese Taiwan and overseas, the materials include: a brief introduction, a full report in English and a working system. The working language of the contest is English and Chinese.

  1. Brief introduction. Introduction template can be downloaded from the website.
  2. Full report.

For teams from Hong Kong SAR, Chinese Taiwan and overseas, the full report in English is necessary, and the report should contain the following information: declaration of originality (template to be downloaded from website), title, abstract (within 120 words in English) and keywords, system schema, functions, and implementation, test plans and result analysis, and references. The report must be within 20 pages in English (font size 12, and single line spacing), including all the information required.

Teams from Chinese mainland should submit the full report in Chinese within 15000 words (font size 12, and single line spacing), including declaration of originality (template to be downloaded from website), title, abstract (within 200 words) and keywords, system schema, functions, and implementation, test plans and result analysis, and references.

Teams from Hong Kong SAR, Chinese Taiwan and overseas can also submit the full report in Chinese. If teams submit full report in Chinese, a detailed abstract in English is necessary within 6 pages (font size 12, single line spacing), including English title, abstract, system schema and implementation, test results.

  1. Working system. The working system should be based on the assigned platform.
  2. All teams are required to submit the brief introduction and full report before July 1st, 2018 via both email and post (two hardcopies), while the working system should be brought to Shanghai, China for appraisal. Details on submission will be announced in early June, 2018 on the contest website.
  3. The appraisal will be held on July 20~25, 2018 in Shanghai, China. The appraisal is face to face, all participant teams are required to attend the judgment. In general, each has no more than one hour to give their presentation, including oral presentation (PPT), test for the working system and Q&A.
  4. More details about the appraisal will be announced at the contest website in June, 2018.

4 Awarding ceremony

Awarding ceremony will be held right after the appraisal in Shanghai, China.

Special information for overseas participants

The face to face appraisal and awarding ceremony will be held in Shanghai, China. All travel expenses to/from the event should be covered by the teams. Considering the cost of overseas traveling, at least one team member from each team is required to participate in the face to face judging session of appraisal in July, 2018 in Shanghai of China.
